Caledonia Hole 8

Caledonia Hole Spotlight: The Par 5 at No. 8

Ali Bird, instructor at the Steve Dresser Golf Academy at True Blue Golf Club, is well-versed in the layouts at both her academy’s home course and its sister course at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club. Here, she offers some playing advice on one of Caledonia’s most noted holes, the par-5 No. 8:

It’s actually not as tricky as people think. It has bunkers down the right side that really just affects the tee shots. The smart play is to take your tee shot over the first bunker on the left-hand side of that series of traps. Don’t try to get too greedy with it. The best feature here is that there’s a birdhouse visible from the tee box; if you aim for that and execute your shot, you’re in good shape at the outset.

The second shot is not too difficult. One tricky part here, though, is the water down by the green. Most players will choose to lay up here, but veteran players with ability will make the bold attempt to go for it here in two. If you’re taking the conservative approach, your third-shot approach will typically not exceed 120 yards into the green.

The green slopes back to front, and offers the opportunity to hit a short approach shot more aggressively. Well-executed shots toward the upslope of the green will feed back to a front pin placement. The greens at Caledonia can run slick on any given day, so make sure you’re not too aggressive on any downhill putt.

Whether you birdie or bogey this great golf hole, it provides an adrenaline rush you’ll need to tame in order to finish the front nine effectively as a tricky par 3 awaits at No. 9. We look forward to seeing you out at Caledonia soon, and can’t wait to hear about your experience!
